It's a Girl Thing

3 Truths to Remember on Valentine’s Day

Ever since I was little, my parents have worked to make Valentine’s Day special for me and my siblings. Every year they shower us with candy, homemade cookies, and notes of encouragement. Through these small traditions, I’ve learned that anyone can enjoy Valentine’s Day, regardless of the circumstance.

Maybe you dread this time of year because you don’t have a special someone to share it with (I mean really, who likes to celebrate a holiday that reminds you of how single you are?). Or, maybe you’re completely indifferent and plan on letting the day pass without attention.

Either way, I want to show you how you can make February 14th a happy occasion! 🙂 So, here are three truths to keep in mind this season…

1) Your relationship status does NOT define you

That heart—or lack thereof—on your Facebook page? It doesn’t determine your worth.

So often we look around us and let the happiness of other couples steal our joy. It’s so easy to let doubtful questions consume our time.

“She has a boyfriend. Why don’t I? Am I not pretty or talented enough?”

“Why does he like her and not me? Should I change myself?”

“She has all the guys falling at her feet. What makes her so special? Aren’t I special?”

“What if no one ever wants me?”

Sound familiar?

Whether you struggle with jealousy, feelings of inadequacy, or just downright discouragement, I wanna tell you I’m right there with you. I’ve played the comparison game and thrown some impressive pity parties.

But friend, guess what? It’s vanity.

These painful feelings are real, but they’re unnecessary. In fact, they border on selfishness.

Instead of wasting away in self-doubt and viscous questions, open your Bible to John 15. Let Jesus remind you of your identity. He claimed you long before anyone else ❤

“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:1-3, ESV).

You are not identified by the number of guys who think you’re pretty, by the amount of dates you’ve been on, or by the absence of a boyfriend. You’re identified in JESUS, who cherishes you and exercises perfect timing in your life (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

Abide in Jesus. Your identity is in His love–no one else’s.

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10, ESV).

2) Jesus loves you

It’s the truth. Plain. Simple. Precious.

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him” (1 John 3:1, ESV).

If you battle insecurity of what others think, I want you to stop right now. Stomp out those thoughts and dig into Scripture. Let God remind you of His love. After all, His feelings towards you are so much greater than what others think.

Friend, would you do yourself a huge favor? Flip over to Romans 8–or 1 John–and let their truths sink into your soul. Bask in Jesus’ love–the love that drove Him to the cross. The love that left Him forsaken by the Father. The love that crushed death so you can live with Him forever.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love” (John 15:9, ESV).

Don’t blow human love out of proportion. Because truly, all the loving people in the world could never compensate for God’s intense love for you.

Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so….

No one will ever change that. ❤

“I led them with cords of kindness, with the bands of love, and I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws, and I bent down to them and fed them” (Hosea 11:4, ESV).

3) Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples!

Shocker, I know 😉

For real though–who says February 14th is just for sappy dates? Don’t get me wrong—I look forward to the day I have a guy to celebrate with 😉 But what’s to stop me from enjoying the holiday now? Why not take advantage of the opportunities to spread a little extra kindness this Valentine’s Day?

You could start some new traditions!

My favorite things to do are deliver Valentine cookies to my neighbors, make fun little treats for my piano students, and send special texts to loved ones. Most of all, I try to use the day to refocus my heart and thank God for His love…though that tradition needs some sharpening 🙂

There are so many ways to make Valentine’s day memorable! Get creative and throw a little cheer around.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.  Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love”(1 John 4:7-8, ESV).

P.S. While you’re at it, you might as well indulge in chocolate sales 😉

That’s all for now!

I hope you’ll take these simple truths to heart and enjoy a fabulous Valentine’s Day 🙂
