“I don’t think people realize that it is really important to pray for your future spouse, even when you don’t know who it is.”
One of my close friends said this to me awhile ago, and it really stuck with me.
I mentioned a couple posts back that I write prayers for my future husband in a journal to him. As I develop the habit of praying for him, I’ve noticed two things…
- Prayer connects my heart to him in a way nothing else ever could…It’s like I already know him, because I can talk to the One who does.
- Praying for my future husband not only (I hope) strengthens him, but it’s a faith builder for me, and my love for him grows as a result.
But isn’t that kinda weird? I mean, how are you supposed to pray for someone you don’t even know?
Well, I’ve watched some incredible guys model qualities I admire and noticed what they pray for.
I skimmed through verses on manhood and studied various men in the Bible who really loved God.
And, I’ve searched my own heart—not just to see what I desire in a spouse, but to examine prayer requests of my own, so I can adapt them into prayers for my future husband.
There are countless things you could pray for as your future husband grows and matures, but here are a few prompts that might help you…
1) His relationship with God.
His relationship with Jesus is so important, and even fragile.
Satan would love to break fellowship between God and my husband, and plant doubts to pull him away from his Father. My future husband’s whole life revolves around his connection with Christ, and I need to pray that nothing interferes with his passion for Jesus.
Pray for spiritual hunger, nearness to God, and most of all, for his ability to lead others–and eventually you–spiritually.
–> Here are a few verses to help you pray in this area: James 4:8, John 15:4, Colossians 2:6
2) His relationships with people
Relationships are hard. Giving the selflessness, focus, patience they require is tough.
My prayer is that God will bless my husband with sturdy, uplifting friends, and that he’ll possess a joyfully loving reputation.
Pray for his patience when difficult people cross his path. Pray for understanding in all his encounters. Pray for him to be diligent in becoming the friend others need.
3) The desires of his heart/his goals
Who doesn’t have aspirations? Psalm 27:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”
My prayer is that my future husband will delight in Jesus and experience the joy of seeing his desires met. It’s always exciting to obtain the things you’ve strained for.
Pray for him to pursue his dreams and work diligently to reach his goals.
“I pray that God would fill your heart with dreams, and that faith gives you the courage to do great things.” -Mark Harris
4) His struggles/trials
I don’t know his struggles or temptations, but God does.
It’s never a bad time to ask Him for comfort and deliverance in my husband’s life. No matter what he’s experiencing, I am confident that God will use my prayers to strengthen him and accomplish things neither of us could imagine.
–> 2 Corinthians 12:9 is my favorite verse to pray over him, especially in trials.
You could use that verse, or refer to one of these for a prompt 🙂 Psalm 23:4, Romans 8:28, Psalm 147:3, Matthew 5:4.
5) His sexual purity
Pursuing purity is really tough, especially in today’s society.
I ask God to protect my husband’s purity more than anything else.
Sexual sin can be so appealing—and it starts out so small—but the end results is devastation and heartbreak. Every. Time.
I don’t want my husband to suffer the consequences of fleeting pleasures. I don’t want him to struggle through recovery of disastrous mistakes.
But…if he does fall, I pray he’ll get back up. That he won’t let his sin define him, or forget who he is in Christ. I beg God to have mercy on him, that he may experience forgiveness and restoration in anything that may violate his purity.
My prayer is that God will crush Satan under his feet, and arm my husband to resist impurity–to flee its lusts with everything he has.
Verses to pray over him: 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, Matthew 5:27-30, 2 Timothy 2:22 , Job 8:6, Joel 2:12-13 ❤
6) His work ethic
I’m probably the most distracted person I know, and that’s not super helpful when it comes to getting things done 😉 I’m still working on developing a good work-ethic, but the more I try, the more I realize how hard diligence is to obtain. I don’t want my husband to struggle like I have (aka–experiencing the consequences of distraction), so, I pray for his diligence–and a want to attitude.
Whether he’s my age or older, he’s most-likely juggling college or a job right now. My prayer is that he’ll manage his time wisely and eagerly tackle his tasks.
Pray for perseverance.
7) His discernment
Sometimes decisions are easy and telling right from wrong is a cinch. But a lot of times, lines are blurry. Answers aren’t always obvious, and seeking God’s wisdom takes a lot of patience.
I pray my future husband will depend on Jesus for direction and approach difficult situations with integrity.
These verses are great ones to use when praying for your husband’s discernment 🙂
James 3:17-18, Proverbs 1:7, Colossians 2:2-3
Those are just a few things I pray, and I hope these ideas help you!
